View Larger Map Known as the ‘Heart of the Caribbean’, Antigua sets the gentle rhythm for the laid-back pace of this magical part of the world. The close links to British history make the island a great place to explore, with historical forts, sugar mills, museums and harbours all providing a fascinating insight into a time when Nelson and the grand sailing ships were frequent visitors. Sailing remains one of the island’s most popular activities, but, of course, it’s the fabulous beaches and idyllic resorts which continue to draw people back to Antigua year after year. Like all the Caribbean islands, Antigua is the perfect holiday destination whether you’re a couple, a family with children or travelling alone and just wanting to get away from it all. Let us help you discover the Antigua that you’re looking for. Out and About If you can pull yourself away from the beaches and crystal clear waters, Antigua has so much more to offer. Here are some suggestions: • Visit Nelson’s Dockyard and English Harbour, a thriving yachting centre and historic site. English Harbour was Admiral Nelson’s Caribbean base in the 18th Century. • Take a catamaran or yacht cruise and picnic on one of the many isolated beaches. • St John’s, the capital, is well worth a visit for the colourful shops around Redcliffe Quay, Heritage Quay and the towering Anglican Cathedral. • Hire a jeep and explore the scenic Fig Tree Drive, travelling through rainforest and past old sugar mills and churches. • Take a day trip to other beautiful neighbouring islands such as Dominica or Nevis. • ‘Stingray City’ provides a great opportunity to swim with and touch these majestic sea creatures. Food and Drink Do try the national dish of ‘fungi & pepperpot’, a delicious stew. Or try Ducana (sweet potato dumpling) served with saltfish and ‘chop up’ (mashed aubergine, okra and seasoning) – wonderful! As you might expect, the fruit drinks are very special and are made from local Antigua black pineapples, coconuts, guavas and mangoes. For something stronger, we can recommend the locally produced Cavalier Rum and Wadadli Beer. There’s a great choice for eating out. We like Le Bistro for its authentic French cuisine, The Home for delicious local specialities and East at Carlisle Bay for its superb pan-Asian cuisine. Enjoy a swim as your lunch is prepared at the more casual OJ’s at Johnson’s Point or Turner’s Beach Bar & Grill. Papa Zouk is renowned for its Creole seafood, or experience the romance of The Cove, perched on the cliff at Boon’s Point. Getting There Flying time from the UK is approximately 8 hrs 30 mins. British Airways Daily departures from Gatwick until the end of March, then 5 times per week (on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays) on B777 aircraft with World Traveller, World Traveller Plus and Club World cabins. Complimentary regional add-ons from selected airports are included, subject to availability. Virgin Atlantic Departures from Gatwick 3 times per week (on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) on B744 aircraft with Economy, Premium Economy and Upper Class cabins.
