View Larger Map With 365 sweeping white sand beaches and coves, there’s one for every day of the year – and that’s how long you’ll want to stay on this idyllic island. Known as the ‘Heart of the Caribbean’, Antigua sets the gentle rhythm for the laid back pace of this magical part of the world. The close links to British history make the island a great place to explore, with historical forts, sugar mills, museums and harbours all providing a fascinating insight into a time when Nelson and the grand sailing ships were frequent visitors. Sailing remains one of the island’s most popular activities, but, of course, it’s the fabulous beaches and idyllic resorts which continue to draw people back to Antigua year after year. Whether you’re a couple, a family with children or travelling alone and just wanting to get away from it all, let us help you discover the Antigua that you’re looking for. Out and About Nelson’s Dockyard and English Harbour Enjoy a trip to this beautifully preserved historic site, the only Georgian naval facility still in use anywhere in the world. You’ll find many little cafés and restaurants, as well as a museum displaying memorabilia from the time Admiral Nelson made this his base in the 18th Century. Today the harbour attracts many visitors due to its thriving yachting scene. Hire a jeep and explore Fig Tree Drive Driving in Antigua is effortless as the island is small and relatively flat. Exploring scenic Fig Tree Drive, you’ll pass through rainforest, old sugar mills and churches. But, if you don’t fancy driving yourself, we’ll happily arrange a car and driver for you. Take a catamaran or yacht around the island No visit to Antigua is complete without taking to the water to explore some of the 365 beaches that the island has to offer. Your trip will take you right around the island, with plenty of time to enjoy snorkelling and swimming in the crystal clear waters and a relaxing lunch stop at Green Island. Join the party at Shirley Heights Every Sunday afternoon this restored garrison, with its magnificent panoramic views of English Harbour, Montserrat and Guadeloupe, comes alive with the island’s biggest barbecue and steel band concert. If you don’t want to eat here, simply come and enjoy the music and the party atmosphere. You can also climb to Shirley Heights via the Lookout Trail, a nature trail through the forest that originates at English Harbour. Get away from it all on Barbuda Antigua’s smaller sister, known for its pristine 17 mile stretch of pink sand beach, is sparsely populated and largely undeveloped. Take the fast ferry over to Barbuda and escape the crowds. Perfect for snorkelling, enjoy exploring the reefs and the beach, or take a tour to the bird sanctuary across the lagoon. Food and Drink There’s a great choice for eating out. We like Le Bistro for its authentic French cuisine, East at Carlisle Bay for its superb pan-Asian menu and Carmichael’s at Sugar Ridge for its delicious Caribbean fusion dishes and great views. Enjoy a swim as your lunch is prepared at the more casual OJ’s at Johnson’s Point or Turner’s Beach Bar & Grill. Papa Zouk is renowned for its Creole seafood, or experience the romance of The Cove, perched on the cliff at Boon’s Point. Getting There Flying time from the UK is approximately 8 hrs 30 minutes. British Airways Daily departures from Gatwick. Virgin Atlantic Departures from Gatwick 3 times a week.
