Jamaica

There’s so much character and diversity to Jamaica that we just know you’ll have a wonderful holiday here. It was our first destination when we started Caribtours in 1979 and still remains one of the most welcoming and hospitable places that you’ll ever visit.

Think of Jamaica and you can’t help but think of bright sunshine, warm smiles, cricket, music and an effervescent culture. But there’s also the history, mountains, rivers and fabulous beaches. Then there’s the watersports, bustling markets, famous local beers and the ubiquitous ‘Jerk Chicken’. Plus you can choose to stay in refined elegance in luxurious villas, or make a charming inn your base for an active holiday. Better still, why not let us recommend a two-centre stay so that you can experience the very best of Jamaica.

Out and About
We could write an entire book on things to do in Jamaica, but here are just a few of our suggestions:

• Visit the dramatic Dunn’s River or Mayfield Falls or take an exciting river rafting trip down the Rio Grande or Martha Brae.

• Eat jerk chicken and other specialities at the legendary Rick’s Café and visit nearby Xtabi where you can also dive off some of the highest cliffs on the island.

• Swim with dolphins at Dolphin Cove.

• Chukka Caribbean Adventure Tours offer jeep safaris, horseriding, river and canopy tours from Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.

• Sample the rum on the Appleton Estate, where it has been distilled for over 250 years.

• Take a romantic sunset cruise on the Caribbean Sea, or take a party cruise to the beautiful Dunn’s River Falls.

Food and Drink
If you like your food fragrant and spicy, you’ll be in seventh heaven in Jamaica! Most meals involve fresh fish, chicken, fruit and vegetables. Saltfish and ackee with Johnny cakes (savoury dumplings) is delicious, as are the patties and spicy jerked pork or chicken. And you can’t visit Jamaica without sampling the famous Red Stripe beer or the wonderful white and dark rums, often used as the base for exotic cocktails.

There are so many great restaurants in Jamaica. Round Hill and Jamaica Inn are renowned for their gourmet cuisine. We also recommend Café Aubergine, Toscanini, Almond Tree and Evita’s. You’ll be spoilt for choice in Montego Bay, with The Sugar Mill at Half Moon, Nikita’s or the Boat House. Day-O Plantation and Ma Lou’s will treat you to the authentic Jamaican tastes, or, at Negril, Norma’s on the Beach, Xtabi’s and Kuyaba are all excellent.
