Mexico

From jungles and mystical Mayan temples to vibrant, modern cities and magnificent beachfront resorts, Mexico is as diverse as it is utterly enthralling.

Wherever you go in Mexico, prepare to experience an almost electric atmosphere of excitement and discovery. Life here is always full of colour and vigour, though it’s also the perfect place to come and relax. The hotels and resorts are amongst the best in the world and promise a holiday that will go way beyond your expectations. Mexico is a large country but our focus is the gorgeous Riviera Maya, located on the Yucatán peninsula, in the heartland of the ancient Mayan civilisation. The Riviera Maya is all about having fun in the sun, with many of the country’s best beaches and reefs making it ideal for watersports enthusiasts, as well as offering a host of other activities. With such a rich cultural history, there are some fascinating places to visit, including ancient Mayan sites such as Tulum and Chichén Itzá. We can arrange a selection of private tour options to add on to your stay by the beach, including an unforgettable journey around the Yucatán, or a short trip to the country’s intriguing capital, Mexico City.

Out and About
Day trip to Isla Mujeres
Take a boat trip over to the beautiful Isla Mujeres for a really special day out. While there, rent a golf buggy to explore the island, visit the turtle farm, have lunch in a local restaurant and then relax in a hammock under the palm trees on the beautiful white sand beach of Playa Norte. Pure bliss!

Souvenir shopping in Playa del Carmen
Spend the day browsing the many shops on the Quinta Avenida in colourful Playa del Carmen. You’ll find lovely boutique style shops selling beautiful silver jewellery, local pottery and glassware. Then, when the sun goes down, enjoy a cocktail or two up on a rooftop sunset bar before enjoying some authentic Mexican cuisine at one of the many excellent local restaurants.

Swim in a cenote
No trip to the Yucatán Peninsula is complete without a trip to a cenote. These naturally formed freshwater pools are found in underground limestone caves dotted round the region. Lit by the
sunlight which streams in through the roof and dances on the water, these clear pools provide a cool and refreshing break from the midday sun.

Snorkel the barrier reef
The Mayan Riviera boasts the world’s second largest reef after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, so the snorkelling and diving here is fantastic. Take a day trip to the island of Cozumel and visit the
Chankaanab marine park, home to amazing coral formations and marine life. Or travel up north between June – September for the extraordinary opportunity to snorkel with giant whale sharks.

Mérida is a must
Get a feel for the real Mexico by spending time in the cultural city of Mérida. This friendly city retains the colonial architectural style of years gone by with cobbled streets and brightly painted houses. The main square boasts a beautiful cathedral and is fringed with cafés, restaurants and street vendors selling local foods and handicrafts.

Food and Drink
Whatever your taste, dining options on the Riviera Maya are endless. Breakfast at El Restaurante at Maroma Resort and Spa is a real treat, and you’ll love the fine dining at El Puerto at Fairmont Mayakoba. When we’re in Mexico, we always head to 100% Natural for delicious healthy lunches, and if on Isla Mujeres it’s got to be the pasta dishes at Villa Rolandis. If you’re looking to go Mexican in Playa del Carmen with local food and a Mariachi band, head to La Parilla for a fun and casual atmosphere, or for somewhere a bit more special, try The Glass Bar or Di Vino on Quinta Avenida.

When to go

Spring & Autumn Equinox

The Spring and Autumn equinoxes occur on 20-21 March and 22-23 September and are a popular time to visit the Temple of Kukulcán at Chichén Itzá. You will be astounded at the skill of the ancient Mayan astronomers and stone masons when you witness the natural light-and-shadow effect on the temple. The undulating shadow is said to represent the plumed serpent god, Kukulcán, crawling down the side of the pyramid.
