Puerto Rico was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Antilles in 1493. This vast island has a unique and fascinating mix of Latin, West Indian and Hispanic influences. It is the one Caribbean island which offers something for virtually everyone – fascinating history and architecture in Old San Juan, beaches, shopping, hiking in rain forests of the El Junque National Park, river rafting, scuba-diving, golf and delicious cuisine.

We have not yet found the sort of beach resorts in Puerto Rico which we know our clients are looking for but we have found two wonderful small hotels in and around San Juan. Depending on your personal taste, one or the other will make the perfect base from which to explore what is, in our view, Puerto Rico’s crowning glory – Old San Juan. We strongly recommend a two-centre holiday combining the historical and architectural fascination of Old San Juan with one of our beach resorts – Antigua or the Virgin Islands for example.
The San Juan Gate, which dates back to 1520, is the only remaining gate to the massive city wall which originally consisted of two 42ft high parallel walls.
