There are few destinations on the Earth with the enduring appeal of Italy. Rolling hills, sun-dappled vineyards, dramatic coastline and incredible food are just a few of the reasons why visitors are drawn here year after year.

A country drenched in history and culture, from the Roman ruins of Pompeii to the soaring Sistine Chapel; the home of Da Vinci, Puccini, Caravaggio and Vivaldi. It's a land of contrasts, a place where you can rub shoulders with fashion royalty in Milan or take a trip back in time amongst the rustic villages of rural Sicily; where you can retreat to the privacy of a Tuscan villa, or brave the bustling traffic of Rome, the Eternal City.

The scenery is nothing short of spectacular, whether you're looking out across the snow-capped peaks of the Alps, the cascading cliffs of the Amalfi Coast or the smouldering crater of majestic Mount Etna. Head to the Aeolian Islands to escape the crowds, enjoy languid seafood lunches on rugged Sardinia, or immerse yourself in the Renaissance delights of unmissable Florence. From Venice to Vesuvius, from Turin to Taormina, Italy is one of those places that deserves every superlative heaped upon it.

Italian, though English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

Climb Mount Etna in Sicily

One of Sicily’s greatest natural attractions is Mount Etna, rising 3,326 metres from the ground where volcanic rocks, black sands and lava flows form an otherworldly lunar landscape. Take a hike up this impressive active volcano, or, if you’d prefer a less active adventure, the Circumetnea Railway train journey is a more comfortable option. You can even ski here while enjoying unbroken views of the sea.

Jaw-Dropping Scenery of Lake Como

Escape to the scenic Lake Como where neoclassical villas, gorgeous palaces and charming restaurants surround the azure waters. Take a boat trip to the lake’s quaint villages or, for more adventurous types, why not try wind surfing. We’d also recommend a visit to the gorgeous town of Menaggio with its charming boutique shops.

Visit the Colosseum

This is one of Ancient Rome’s greatest feats of architecture and has a fascinating history, making it a must-visit in Italy. Immerse yourself in historic Roman culture, and follow in the footsteps of gladiators in the arena they battled in all those years ago.

Explore Ancient Pompeii

A city frozen in time that was buried for almost two millennia is reason alone to visit Italy’s most compelling archaeological site. Volcanic ash and lava has kept this fallen city well preserved since its demise in the 79 AD Mount Vesuvius eruption, and it provides a rare insight into Ancient Roman history.

Toss a Coin in the Trevi Fountain

This famous fountain is well worth a visit; it’s a work of art in itself, made up of intricate sculptures. The stunning Palazzo Poli palace forms its backdrop, where royals held lavish parties in the 19th Century. Don’t forget to throw a coin in for luck!
